I got starter locs
I did a thing. I started the new year by getting starter locs. I have experienced growing pains with my natural hair for some time now and felt I needed a change. For a while, I was going back and forth between relaxing my hair and getting starter locs because caring for my natural hair was beginning to take up too much time. Additionally, I have a daughter with a lot of hair that I must also maintain. Ultimately, I decided to move forward with starter locs because I want my daughter to know that natural hair is beautiful, and I want to highlight that type of beauty in our home.
The decision to transition from natural hair to locs
I have been natural since before being natural was cool. I started growing my natural hair back in 2009. I was the queen of the wash and go. Lately, though, I wanted to do something different. In addition to needing a change, hair has transitioned a lot since 2009. It responds differently to products that I have used for years. It takes longer for me to do, which is really difficult because I now have a daughter with more hair than me.
For a while, I was leaning heavily towards relaxing my hair because it is easy to maintain a relaxer. However, around the time I considered this, my daughter, who is seven, started experiencing microaggressions about her hair texture at school. It was making her question the beauty of our hair. Because of this, I decided not to relax my hair but rather to get locs. I want my daughter to understand that textured hair is beautiful, and I wasn’t sure if I could convey that with relaxed hair.
Starter Locs: Deciding between instant locs, comb coils, and two strand twists.
There are multiple ways that you can start your starter locs. I considered the three methods for my starter locs: instant locs, comb coils, and two strand twists. I initially decided that I wanted to start my locs journey with instant locs, but I needed help finding someone proficient in that method. A few people recommended that I move forward with the with the two strand twist starter loc method because of the length and texture of my hair.

My loctician is one of my sorority sisters who has locs of her own, and has maintained the locs of a few of my friends. She used Shine ‘n Jam Conditioning Gel Extra Hold to make the parts as crisp and straight as possible. In addition, she used Taliah Waajid’s Lock It Up, a product that adds moisture and provides hold.
I am very excited about my starter locs and my loc journey. I can’t wait to see where this goes. Have you ever considered getting locs? Let me know in the comments.
