Tips and Tricks for Moving With Kids

Today marks two years that we have lived in our current home. Though I love our home, moving with kids was a challenge. The difficulty of certain life events changes when you have kids. Vacations are no longer as easy to plan as once and become more expensive. Your house may not be as clean as it was before you had children. You may also now have to think long and hard about what to make for dinner when you have little picky eaters at the table. Another consideration changes greatly when you have children – the fact that moving with them is a tedious process that requires careful planning to get right. If this is your first time moving with your little ones, let us offer you some guidance.

With that in mind, let’s begin:

Familiarize them with the environment

If you can, bringing your children to the new household before you move can help them understand exactly where they’re going. You can show them their bedrooms-to-be, the beautiful local town, the garden, or whatever help you, yourself, fall in love with the property. This way, the move becomes a goal to be aimed at and excited by, even if the entire approach can initially seem a little intense and unsettling for young children.

As much as you can, keep your routine

Sure, the routine is slightly lopsided under you, moving from one home to another. Unless you’re moving around the corner or remaining in the same neighborhood, it is unlikely that they will stay at the same school they are currently in. That said, it’s good to keep some stability if you can. Eat at the same times, sleep at the same times, and wake at the same times. Try to find balance by limiting your hard work to the daytime and connecting with your children in the evenings. Tell them when to expect big changes, like the long drive to the new house or packing your belongings with the Allied Moving Company. This will help them feel a sense of calmness in the storm of changes taking place.

Give them some dominion

It’s important to give your children just a little dominion over their moving timeline, so they can feel like they’ve made a contribution and aren’t solely swept up in your larger plans. For example, you could ask them to pack their best toys in an overnight bag, allow them to help you box up their other possessions, and keep a watchful eye over everything else for the sake of oversight. This way, they feel much less thrown about by the winds of change, but instead can make those little decisions that matter to them, which to a small child is pretty much everything of importance in the whole world. With this advice, you can move well with children. Good luck!
