It’s the most wonderful time of the year! It’s time to watch Christmas movies, bake tasty treats, and decorate the Christmas tree. I am here today to let you know that you can have a beautiful tree and not break the bank. Check out my five tips to decorate your Christmas tree below.
Christmas Tree Size and Shape
There are so many directions you can go with here. You can choose a real tree or a faux tree. My family has traditionally used a faux tree because we don’t like the work that comes with maintaining a real tree. Some faux trees are very realistic looking, and others create a totally different vibe. You can select a flocked or pre-lit tree as well. Flocked and pre-lit Christmas trees tend to cost a little bit more than Christmas trees that don’t have those extra features.
Color Palette
Before I begin to decorate my Christmas tree, I decide on a color scheme for my Christmas décor. I typically choose one, two, or three colors. Once the color scheme is selected, I don’t use any color outside of that scheme. I incorporate those colors in the ornaments, ribbons, lights, and tree skirts that I select. I balance the colors, trying not to let any one of them overpower the others. Trees with too many colors look eclectic, whereas trees with an intentional color scheme look more polished. Some color combinations that look good are traditional red, green, and gold; beautiful blue and silver; posh pink and blue; and regal white, gold, and silver.
Decorate Your Christmas Tree Using Ribbon
Ribbon gives a tree a more polished look. The ribbon should fall in line with the same color scheme selected. I prefer wired ribbon to ribbon without wire because you can manipulate it easier. Another aspect to consider with ribbon is texture. A beautiful velvet ribbon or simple burlap ribbon can really be a statement piece on a tree.
Use Various Sized Ornaments
The ornaments make or break the tree. I use small, medium, and large-sized ornaments. I also try to buy decorations that have different textures and degrees of shimmer. Irregular shapes can also be fun to gaze upon. Start by adding your most oversized ornaments first, then the medium-sized ornaments, and finish up with fitting in the small ones.
Natural Picks and Stems
Picks and stems are finishing touches for the tree. They add texture and definition. There are many choices, from natural wood elements to whimsical options, as well super glittery selections too. Whichever you choose, be sure to point them up and down to create the illusion of a fuller tree.
Pro tip: You can use picks or stems to create a tree topper. Grab picks of various sizes and colors and stick them in the top of your tree, pointing up.
I hope this was helpful. Take it from me; you can decorate your Christmas tree on a budget and still have a gag-worthy Christmas tree. Do you have any decorating tips that I missed?
I didn’t know what those things that you stick in a tree were called! Picks. Now I know.
Love the tip about ribbon, mainly because I needed to get creative and used ribbon this year to save money on decor but still mix things up. The velvet ribbon idea … might use that next year!
LOL! I discovered they had a real name earlier this year too. Ribbon is a real game-changer. You can change the entire look and feel of your tree for a relatively low cost with ribbon.
Love this post. Decorating Christmas trees happen to be my favorite Christmas activity. So fun, especially when you are doing it with ppl you love.
Agreed! I love watching the smiles on my children’s faces as they decorate the tree. They get so excited!
Love this list! I put ribbon on my tree for the first time a few years ago and it was a game changer!
A ribbon can definitely change the entire vibe of a Christmas tree.
Decorating Christmas trees are so fun. Best thing to do as a family during Christmas.
Yes! My kids enjoy decorating the Christmas tree so much!
Love this post! I usually don’t have a ‘theme’ and instead add all of our family ornaments to our tree. However, I have been collecting color-themed ornaments to hopefully have a second, more organized tree one of these years 🙂
Family ornaments is a theme. A very sweet theme!
