The holiday season is a time to revel in nostalgia from traditions like decorating the Christmas tree; drinking hot chocolate; watching Christmas movies that make you laugh and cry (happy tears)! The Christmas season is a magical time of year that inspires wonder, whimsy, and hope. Unfortunately, too often we don’t see Black people as often as we should in the Christmas movie genre. Due to this, I wanted to take a moment and use my platform to highlight my favorite Black Christmas movies. Check them out below:

Pin for Top 5 Black Christmas Movies

5. Last Holiday (2006)

The last holiday is a romantic comedy featuring Queen Latifah and LL Cook J. Queen Latifah’s character Georgia is diagnosed with a brain tumor and given a few weeks to live. She decides to use her life’s savings to go on a luxury vacation in Europe. Last Holiday is a great choice for date night. This movie is a great reminder to seize the day and live a life that makes you happy.

4. Almost Christmas (2016)

Almost Christmas is a comedy-drama that highlights a family coming together for the first time after the death of their matriarch. It features appearances from many of my faves such as Kimberly Elise Neal, Mo’Nique, Danny Glover, and Gabrielle Union. This is a great movie to watch if you want to laugh hard and laugh often. One thing to note is that there is strong language in this film. It’s best watched after the little ones go to bed.

3. Best Man Holiday (2013)

The Best Man holiday is the tear-jerker of the list. I loved the original The Best Man movie, and The Best Man Holiday doesn’t disappoint. The cast from the original movie reprises their roles in this sequel. There are moments in this movie that will make you laugh and cry hard. This movie explores the themes of friendship, family, death, and hope beautifully!

2. This Christmas (2007)

Up until 2020, This Christmas was my go-to Christmas movie.   This movie features a star-studded cast that includes Loretta Devine, Delroy Lindo, Idris Elva, Regina King, Sharon Leal, Columbus Short, Lauron London, Chris Brown, and Laz Alonzo. This Christmas is a comedy-drama that follows the trials and tribulations of the Whitfield family during the Christmas season. In addition to being an awesome film, it also has an excellent soundtrack. My favorite feature from the soundtrack is Chris Brown’s “Try a Little Tenderness” in which we get to see him perform fully in the film.  the  While This Christmas has been displaced as my favorite Black Christmas movie. It still has a very special place in my heart.

The movie that tops my list of Black Christmas Movies is: Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020)

Let me start off by saying that Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey is everything I didn’t know I needed! This movie is full of Christmas magic, Black joy, and Black excellence, and I am here for it all! This Christmas musical was originally supposed to be a stage play and all of the actors had beautiful stage voices. It stars Forest Whitaker, Keegan-Michael Key, Hugh Bonneville, Lisa Davina Philip, Ricky Martin,  Anika Rose, the incomparable Phylicia Rashad, and introducing Madalen Mills. There is not one dull moment from the beautiful songs to the crisp and engaging choreography, and the effortless acting. The best thing about this movie is that it is family-friendly. I love that I can watch this with my children over and over again. It has become a new Christmas tradition for us!
