Somebody said it’s hot chocolate season! This homemade hot chocolate is very easy to make and tastes way better than the premade versions. It’s perfect for those nights when your family gathers to decorate the Christmas tree, or bundle up near the fireplace and watch a Christmas movie. You can eat it with a baked good, or have it as a treat by itself. This recipe is only 4 ingredients. It really doesn’t get any easier than that!

My kids absolutely love it. They request this hot cocoa recipe all the time. I like to have it ready for them when they get home from school, or when they’ve played outside on a snow day. Check out the recipe below:

Homemade Hot Chocolate Ingredients

1 cup of sugar

½ cup of cocoa powder (processed or natural)

1 teaspoon of salt

1 cup of whole milk (you can also use water or coffee, but I prefer milk)

 

Variations

½ teaspoon of peppermint extract for hot peppermint cocoa

½ teaspoon of Peppermint Schnapps for an adult version of hot cocoa

½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper for a spicy hot chocolate

¼ teaspoon of cinnamon or nutmeg

¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract

Each of these variations gives your homemade hot chocolate a distinctly different taste.

Optional Toppings

Whipped Cream

Marshmallows

Cinnamon Sticks

Fluff

Sprinkles

 

Directions for Making Homemade Hot Chocolate

  1. Combine the sugar, cocoa powder, salt and mix it well.
  2. Pour a cup of hot milk, water, or coffee into your favorite mug.
  3. Add 2 tbs of your hot cocoa mixture to your mug and stir.
  4. Add in your optional variations.
  5. Add your favorite topping for a little razzle-dazzle.
  6. ENJOY!
