5 Reasons Hersheypark Dark Nights Is Worth Adding to Your Fall Plans

There is always something that needs to be done.

Laundry. Work. Practices. Appointments. Dinner. That thing you have been meaning to order. That email you forgot to answer.

The list does not magically disappear because fall arrives.

But somewhere along the way, I have realized that if I wait until everything is done before making room for fun, we will be waiting forever.

So now? Fun gets to go on the list too.

That is part of what I enjoyed about visiting Hersheypark during the Halloween season. Hersheypark Halloween and Dark Nights take a regular theme park experience and turn it into something that feels distinctly fall, with seasonal food, Halloween entertainment, decorations, rides after dark, and, for those who want it, some legitimately spooky experiences.

If you have been considering a fall trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania, here are five reasons I think Hersheypark Dark Nights is worth making room for.

1. It Gives You a Reason to Actually Do Something Fun This Fall

I love fall.

I also know how easy it is to spend an entire season talking about all the things we should do and somehow never actually doing them.

We should go pumpkin picking.

We should take a weekend trip.

We should go see the leaves.

We should do something for Halloween.

Then suddenly the Christmas decorations are out and we did none of it.

A day at Hersheypark is an easy way to put an actual experience on the calendar. You do not have to create the entertainment yourself. Show up, ride the rides, eat something ridiculous, take a few pictures, and enjoy being somewhere different for the day.

Sometimes making room for joy really is that simple.

2. You Can Decide How Spooky You Want the Day to Be

One thing I appreciate about Hersheypark during Halloween season is that you do not have to experience Halloween exactly one way.

There is the more traditional Hersheypark fun and family-friendly Halloween atmosphere, while Dark Nights brings the scarier side with haunted attractions and scare zones after dark.

That makes it easier to build a day around the people you are actually traveling with.

If your group wants pumpkins, chocolate, rides, and Halloween fun without being chased by somebody holding a chainsaw, you can lean in that direction.

If being chased by somebody holding a chainsaw is your idea of fun, first, we have different definitions of joy. But there are options for you too.

If you are traveling with children, I recommend checking Hersheypark’s current Dark Nights information before your visit so you know which experiences make sense for your family.

3. Theme Parks Are Just Better When It Isn’t 95 Degrees

I said what I said.

I enjoy a good theme park day. What I do not particularly enjoy is standing on hot pavement in July wondering why I willingly paid money to sweat this much.

Fall is different.

Cooler temperatures can make walking around an amusement park all day much more enjoyable, especially if you stay into the evening.

And once the sun goes down, the entire park feels different. Lights come on, the Halloween atmosphere picks up, and even rides you have experienced before can feel completely different in the dark.

Just remember that fall temperatures can change quickly.

Dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes. Your feet do not care that your outfit looked good when you left the house.

4. The Seasonal Food Absolutely Counts as Part of the Experience

I firmly believe food can be an activity.

Especially seasonal food.

Especially at Hershey.

Part of the fun of visiting during the fall is seeing what limited-time treats and Halloween-inspired foods are available that you would not necessarily find during a regular park day.

My strategy at places like Hersheypark is usually to choose a few things that actually sound special and share them. That way, everybody gets to taste a little bit of everything without us spending the rest of the evening regretting our decisions.

Before your trip, check the current seasonal food offerings and make a mental note of a few things you want to try.

Yes, I plan dessert.

No, I will not be taking questions.

5. Someone Else Has Already Planned the Fun for You

This might be the best part.

I love hosting. I love traveling. I love getting people together. I love a good experience.

But I do not always want to be the person responsible for making the experience happen.

Sometimes I want to arrive somewhere and have someone else already responsible for the decorations, food, entertainment, activities, and cleanup.

Hersheypark is one of those outings where you can just show up.

There is nothing to decorate. Nothing to cook. No activities to coordinate. No house to clean before people arrive.

You get to participate in the fun instead of producing it.

And for those of us who spend a lot of our lives being responsible for things, that counts.

Take the pictures. Eat the chocolate. Ride something that makes you immediately question why you got in line.

And then put your phone away for a while and enjoy yourself.

What to Bring to Hersheypark in the Fall

I am all for being prepared.

I am not for carrying half my house around an amusement park in the name of being prepared.

A few strategically chosen things can make a long park day much more comfortable without turning you into the designated family pack mule.

A Comfortable Fanny Pack

The goal is to keep your essentials close without carrying a huge bag all day.

A small zippered fanny pack gives you enough room for your phone, cards, lip balm, and other little necessities without weighing you down.

A Portable Phone Charger

Between taking pictures, recording videos, checking the Hersheypark app, and using your phone throughout the day, your battery can disappear quickly.

A compact portable charger is one of those things I would much rather have and not need than need and not have.

An Empty Refillable Water Bottle

You are going to do a lot of walking, even when the weather is cool.

An empty refillable water bottle lets you stay hydrated throughout the day without carrying something unnecessarily heavy from the beginning.

Choose something lightweight and leakproof. This is not the day for the enormous emotional-support water bottle.

A Lightweight Jacket

Pennsylvania fall weather can feel completely different in the afternoon than it does after the sun goes down.

A lightweight jacket gives you another layer without requiring you to lug a bulky coat around the park all day.

A Packable Rain Poncho

You can check the forecast approximately 37 times before leaving home and Mother Nature can still decide she has other plans.

A compact rain poncho takes up very little space and can save you from spending the rest of the day walking around in wet clothes.

Comfortable Walking Shoes

This is not the occasion to break in new shoes.

Wear the sneakers you already know can handle hours of walking without making you miserable.

Cute is welcome. Comfortable is mandatory.

Hand Warmers for Colder Fall Nights

If you are visiting later in the fall, throw a few hand warmers into your bag.

They are tiny, inexpensive, and easy to forget about until the temperature drops and suddenly everybody wants one.

You do not need to prepare for every possible scenario. Check the weather, pack the things that will genuinely make your day easier, and leave some room for whatever Hershey-themed souvenir someone inevitably decides they cannot possibly live without.

Is Hersheypark Dark Nights Worth It?

For us, Hersheypark during Halloween season was a fun way to step outside of our normal routine and actually enjoy the season instead of watching it fly by.

And that is ultimately why experiences like this matter to me.

I spent a lot of years thinking “doing it all” meant keeping up with everything that needed me.

Work. Family. Home. Responsibilities. Goals.

Those things still matter.

But joy matters too.

Doing it all does not mean doing everything. Sometimes it means recognizing that the things you want to do deserve space alongside the things you have to do.

A trip to Hersheypark is not profound. It is roller coasters and chocolate and Halloween decorations.

That’s kind of the point.

Not everything that adds something good to your life needs to be productive, impressive, or important.

Sometimes you should go simply because it sounds fun.

So if Hersheypark Dark Nights has been sitting on your fall bucket list, maybe this is the year you actually go.

There will still be laundry when you get home.
