Schedule It

From regular after-school activities, business meetings, children meeting their friends, and appointments, to visiting family, your house is probably a very busy place. This means that a movie night is going to work best if you plan it rather than doing it last minute. There is something different about doing a movie night compared to just sticking a film on. Try to plan the movie night on a night when everyone is free, this way you can make it a regular thing that your family looks forward to.

Make It Feel Like The Theatre

If you are going to make this something that you do regularly you might want to think about adding some things to your home that will make your home feel like you have taken a trip to the theatre. Get a decent sound system, some comfy seating, and even a projector to pull down on movie night. You don’t have to spend a lot on things like these you can get a projector for a reasonable price now, and you may be able to one that is preloved too. If you are going to make it something you do often with your family, it’s worth it.

Choosing The Movie

This is one of the hardest bits about movie night. Choosing the right movie. Everyone in the family will probably have a different preference for what they would like to watch. If you have a large family with a range of ages it may be difficult to choose a film that everyone will want to watch. Depending on the age of the kids, you may want to do an early movie for the younger children and then when they’re in bed do a later movie for the big kids. You could also put some movies in a hat and pick one out each time. Get everyone to put in a movie they want to watch and then refill the tub with new movies once it is empty. You could include a range of themes such as comedy, movies about love and romance, horror, children’s, and more. You could also include once a month it has to be an educational movie that includes an element of history.

Prepare Some Snacks

Everyone knows that a big part of a movie night is the snacks. You’ve got to get them just right! You might be thinking of just popcorn and candy, however, movie night can go much better than these basics. You could try:

  • Homemade milkshakes
  • Traditional popcorn
  • Finger foods like nuggets or fries
  • Pizzas
  • Carrots or veggie sticks
  • Beef jerky
  • Fruits
  • Ice creams
  • And more

Choose A Theme

If you choose your movie in advance, you could set up your movie night with a theme.  This is a great way to get your kids in a creative mood, you can even get them to help decorate the room and make the snacks in the theme of the film that is chosen. For example, if you are going to watch Harry Potter you could make some themed snacks and make everyone some hats or wands.

Take It Outside

If the weather is warm enough, there is no reason why you need to keep your movie night in the house. Make things even more fun and exciting for your family by planning a movie night outdoors. Just set up a projector on a sheet or blanket and sit back on the grass or sun loungers. You could even enjoy some smores on a small fire.

These are some of the ways you can create a great family movie night. Do you have any other ideas that could help? It would be great to hear about them!
