Most people think that the wash and go is a summer style, but did you know that you can wash and go in the winter? The wash and go is my go-to hairstyle, no matter the weather. Spending most of my day working, chasing kids, or going to school doesn’t leave a lot of time to dedicate to hair care. I love the wash and go because it is a low maintenance hairstyle that looks super cute. Check out my tips below to achieve the perfect wash and go in the winter.
Wash and condition your hair the night before
I have low porosity hair that takes forever to dry. If I want to rock a wash and go in the winter, I absolutely have to wash and condition my hair the evening before. I swear by Cantu’s Sulfate-free Shampoo and their Sulfate-free Hydrating cream conditioner for my winter wash and go. As a natural girl, I know the importance of using sulfate-free products on my hair. Sulfates can be overly harsh on natural hair, stripping it of its natural oils and leaving it dry and brittle. I like my curls moisturized and without the frizz. This shampoo and conditioner combo gives me just that.
Leave-In Conditioner
The next step in my process is to add a leave-in conditioner to my hair. It is better to do this when hair is damp, not wet. I usually use an old t-shirt to begin the drying process. I noticed that I get more frizz when I use an actual towel. My leave-in conditioner of choice for my winter wash and go is Cantu’s Argon oil Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream. I part my hair in 4 parts, and I apply a generous amount to each section. Focusing on my ends and working towards my roots. I love this product because it includes argon oil. Argon oil leads to shiny hair, curl elasticity, and hair growth, which are all things that I want for my hair.
Curl Activator
Up next is the application of curl activator cream. I use Cantu’s Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream. This cream REALLY defines my curls. Without this step, my hair would have more of an afro look than a defined curly look. I apply curl activator cream very generously to my hair section by section. I rake it through, ensuring that all of my hair is covered by the cream. When I am done, I can still see the white cream on top of my hair. My hair absorbs it as time passes.
Pineapple your Wash and Go
Once I have completed the washing, conditioning, adding a leave-in conditioner, and curl activator, I pineapple my curls on top of my head. I use an ouchless scrunchie, and I keep it loose. I lay down to sleep on a silk pillowcase to ensure that my curls don’t lose moisture overnight. If you don’t have a silk pillowcase, get one! It will change your life. I love the freedom of not having to always sleep with a scarf or bonnet, and I am sure my hubby does too!
Spritz and Go
The last step happens the next morning when you wake up. First, I remove the scrunchie and take down the pineapple. It’s normal to see misshapen hair flat on one side or curls that look like they are struggling when you take down the pineapple. Next, I spritz my hair with a water and coconut oil mixture and coax my curls into place. If I’ve gone overboard with the spritzing or if my hair is still wet from the night before, I’ll use the curl diffuser to help dry my hair. I use it on the lowest function, as to not damage my hair. By the end of this process, my curls are revitalized, and I am ready to take over the world!
