Establishing and consistently following a morning routine helps me to have productive days. Let me preface this post with I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON and due to this, I need an easy morning to follow. I try to do most of the heavy lifting and prep the night before so that I can move through my mornings with ease. Additionally, I have two small children to get out of the door in the morning and a husband to contend with. Due to these things, it is crucial for me to begin my day before they wake up and move through my morning routine for me to have a great start to my day.

Morning Routine Outline

Wake Up Early

What does it mean to wake up early? For me, it usually means waking up before 6 am. Ideally, I want to wake up at 5 am to move through my morning routine with ease, but that isn’t always realistic. If I can wake up by 5:30 am, I can usually still make it through most of my routine without an issue. But, if I wake up at 6 am, or later, it usually means I would have to compromise on something in my morning routine.

Are you struggling to wake up early? Start by waking up 10 minutes earlier and push the time back every week. Eventually, you will wake up at your target time, and it won’t feel too different.

Read the bible

Before I get out of bed, I will complete at least one devotional reading for the day. I am reading different devotionals in the Bible app at any given time. How I am feeling or what I am going through will dictate which devotional I read. Sometimes these readings are really quick. If it is a particularly quick reading, I will read two devotionals that morning.

Hydrate

The next step in my morning routine is to make my way downstairs and have a glass of water. When you wake up in the morning, your body is dehydrated. When I am dehydrated, my brain doesn’t work as well. So having a glass of water at the beginning of the day is an easy self-care practice that I can participate in.

Cardio

After I have my glass of water, I make my way downstairs to use my treadmill. Exercising consistently has been difficult for me in the past. Including it in my morning routine is a surefire way to ensure that it happens at some point during my day. I usually will do about 30 minutes on an incline. During my walk, I will either listen to a podcast or catch up on one of my television shows from the night before. If I work up closer to 5 am, I try to also include some free weight exercises. I try to stretch for 5 minutes before and after my workout.

Shower

After my cardio session, I hit the shower and get dressed. I usually try to pick out my clothes the night before, so this activity runs pretty smoothly in the morning.

Eat Breakfast & Drink Coffee

I am a creature of habit. Every morning, I like to eat cream of wheat and a piece of fruit for breakfast and drink my coffee (French vanilla latte) in the morning. While eating my breakfast and drinking my coffee, I use my planner to review my to-do list. I like to try to identify three goals. I usually have one big goal and two smaller goals that I want to achieve. Then, during breakfast, I begin to visualize myself successfully reaching those goals.

Final Step in my Morning Routine

The final step in my morning routine is to wake up my children. While my son is a morning person and wakes up excited for the day, my daughter is not. I find it much easier to manage her attitude in the morning when I have already gotten myself together, and I have left ample time for her to get ready. Then, I walk them through their morning routine and get them out the door.

This is the morning routine that is currently working for me. While this routine works today, I continue to adjust it and modify it depending on what’s going on in my life and the other things I need to accomplish. Do you have a morning routine? If so, what’s your morning routine like?
